An alumnus of the Class of 1966 and former Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Whitcome was legendary in his support of Xaverian High School. Simply put, his time, talent and treasure knew no bounds when it came to his school.
A graduate of Providence College, UCLA and The Wharton School of Business, Dr. Whitcome was an officer of numerous biotech companies. He was the beloved husband of the late Carla (nee Wilson), loving son of Margaret and the late Frank Whitcome and dear uncle of many nieces and nephews.
In 1995, Dr. Whitcome developed a complete analysis and recommendations report for the improvement of Xaverian's financial and development operations. He did this to help ensure that any student who qualified could attend Xaverian. The basis of his report, which served as the core for Xaverian's operations over the past 10 years, was increasing the annual fund-raising levels (which have been done) and developing a significant endowment fund. It was Phil's dream that the endowment be large enough that it would act as a stabilizing force for tuition. He recognized the impact the decreasing number of Xaverian Brothers would have on the financial stability of the school. The Brothers were truly the living endowment for Xaverian. Dr. Whitcome believed that the goal should be to make a Xaverian education possible to a student regardless of their financial situation.
At the time of his passing, Phil was yet again working on behalf of Xaverian. Along with Edward Ricci ('63) and Paul Tanico ('73), Phil was chairing the "Making the Ordinary.Extraordinary" capital campaign. Thanks to the unbelievable generosity of Phil and the other leadership donors to date, we have a historic opportunity to realize his dream. Recently, the Board of Trustees announced a unanimous decision to have our current capital campaign be completed in honor of Phil's immense legacy. Also, the Technology Center and the wing of the building in which it sits will be renamed after Dr. Whitcome. Phil meant a great, great deal to Xaverian High School. His generosity, leadership and inspiration simply cannot be overstated.
